NUS wake up

Dear Sirs/Madams,

The intention of this email is to bring to your kind attention an important
issue that has occurred during the course of the Cyber-Game competition.
Specifically, this issue has to do with the allowance of a team which is
composed entirely of people NOT from NUS into the competition, and the
afore-mentioned team having already qualified for the finals of the
Counter-Strike segment, on the 14th of August.

This matter was first brought up after we realised that the opposing team, had
no legal matriculation numbers on their registration entry. Not ONE of them
could produce a matriculation card, and when asked, said that they were not even
from NUS, and that they were from ITE and various polytechnics.

This was also brought up to the staff manning the event on the ground. However,
the staff ignored the very glaring fact, and allowed them to participate.


My questions are these.

Firstly, why are these people in question, still allowed to participate in the
competition, when it clearly states in the IT Security Carnival 2007 CyberGame
page(http://www.nus.edu.sg/comcen/security/itsecwk07/CyberGame.htm), that 'At
the IT Security Carnival, we take entertainment level all the way to ---our
students'--- all time favourite DOTA and Counterstrike! Challenge and battle
your wits against ---fellow schoolmates--- and outdo them in our cyber games on
the 13th and 14th of August!'

I was not aware that our fellow schoolmates, and the students of the computer
centre included those from other tertiary institutions as well. If this event
was truly open to other tertiary institutions, why wasn't it promoted as such,
as compared to the Hacking Challenge?

Secondly, if matriculation numbers as well as the faculty you are from is a
REQUIREMENT for registration, why were these people which are NOT part of NUS
allowed to register their attendance, WITHOUT a valid matriculation number and
using just their IC numbers, and allowed to participate as well. Why were they,
and us, not told to produce our matriculation cards to confirm our proof of
identity as NUS students, and why was a blind eye turned to such an obvious
exception?

I believe the inclusion of this team, constitutes a very glaring error in the
organisation and management of this event. For if this team is included, the
basic principle is that anybody is invited to this event. For all we know, these
people might as well be the team that won the World Cyber Games in Singapore
this year. How is it fair then, that they are allowed to participate, in what
should be a strictly internal-only event, as promoted and as stated on the
registration form?

An analogy I would like to use to illustrate this, is allowing a world class
athlete, to take part in the internal Track & Field event held by a local
Secondary School, when said athlete is not even a student at said school. Why
not allow every single other world class athlete into the competition then? And
if they all took part, what would be the point of holding said event then. if
the school pays all the costs for organising it, and none of its students
receive the benefits.

And if it is indeed fair for these people to participate, and to even win, why
were the potential participants in this event not told of this fact? For if we
were, and we were not limited to composing teams composed solely of NUS students
AS PROMOTED, we could also have recruited outside help and stood a better chance
in this competition.

If, dear Sirs and Madams, you are dubious about the legality of said team based
on my word and report alone, I would like to ask humbly, that players taking
part in the finals tomorrow be asked to produce valid matriculation cards. It is
frankly, one of the simplest things to do for any NUS student, and logistically
speaking, it should be relatively painless for the organiser as well, as they
already have our matriculation numbers on the registration record.

It is very clear that tomorrow, these people are going to walk away with AT
LEAST $500 worth of prizes as they are already in the finals. It is also going
to be very embarassing for the announcer, to announce that a team from ITE/Poly
has won what was supposed to be, a purely internal NUS event, for there is
neither justice, nor fairness in such an event happening.

Damn bad i tell you. Kana raped by professionals left right centre. Like what Terence said in his mail, you are sending Barcelona to play in the S League.

Yeah we managed to win the NUS teams, but these 18 and 19 year olds, who play like CS everyday, who aren't even eligible for university studies, smacked us left right centre with their weapons. And they rather see the prize money go to outsiders than their own NUS students. Knn man.

Well, at least some consolation, guaranteed I will get a $100 Taka voucher. =)

Sigh Finals in 12 hours time. If we win, I should consider training CS again.

Anyway, there is this new donut shop in Causeway Point, called Munchie Donuts or smth. I bought a box of 12 and went to Mich house and gobbled 2 of it after dinner. hehehe. Nice i like. Yay no need to queue for 2 retarded hours already. When there are donuts right at the comfort of my doorstep.
