ERP
So let's say Donut Factory sells such wonderful bak chor mee that we all know. Due to the 3 hour congested queues that we see lining up outside their store, in a bid to reduce congestion, DF decides to raise their prices of donuts by 10 cts to 50 cts each.
Will it really ease the long queues that we see?
I have some solutions.
1) For goodness sake, either get rid of the speed camera, make the speed camera inoperable during peak hours or increase the acceptable limit to 100km/h. We all know the speed camera along CTE is a white elephant because it ALWAYS jams on the CTE. Why? Well, if you drive often, you will notice everyone slowing down to like 80km/h so as to escape getting caught on film. This simply adds to the problem of congestion in the early mornings and late evenings man.
2) How many of you all use the Park and Ride scheme? At 3 bucks a day? Come on, I rather pay 50 cts of ERP and ride my car into CBD nonetheless.
3) Impose quotas on vehicle ownership based on family size. If you're a family of 3, you're entitled to one car. Family of 6, two. Something like that. Want another car, pay double the price.
4) LTA better start thinking about ways in which they can dig underground. Yes underground our existing expressways. Maybe have an underground CTE or smth. Technologically limited at the present moment, but futuristically feasible. Or follow Bangkok. Dual Layer expressways. Imagine stacking a CTE on top of a CTE.
5) China did something drastic. Even numbered vehicle numbers are allowed to use the CTE on 1,3,5. Odd numbered 2,4,6. Of course, in Singapore, that sounds ridiculous. Maybe... maybe.... we can impose... blue license plates, copied after the concept of red license plates. Cars that are only eligible to drive into the CBD area during peak hours don the blue plate, of course, with an added colour comes an additional premium. Hey, maybe stagger the inflow? 1000-4000 7am - 8am. 4001 - 9999 8am - 9am??
6) Wanna make public transport more attractive? Increase the frequency. Increase the number of trains operating. So that everyone won't feel like they are a compressed metal can of sardines on their way to and from work. Hey SMRT, you're running a profit. Don't tell me you can't afford it.
OR
Increase the gantry fee to 10 bucks. Use the revenue generated to improve the bus and train systems.
7) Hey the world's become flat right. Why not construct a banking hub right in the middle of Woodlands? That way all the analysts, bankers, relationship managers, e.t.c would have to travel north instead of south. I'll be supportive of it!
The concern is, raising the price of ERP and extending the duration is only seeking to DIVERT and not REDUCE the amount of traffic flow into the CBD area. Eventually you're going to screw up roads like Dairy Farm Road, Braddell Road, Upper Thomson Road, e.t.c Then before you know it, you're going to see an ERP gantry greeting you when you take bus A1 from Science to Arts.
Maybe we should promote working in the night. I like. Lol.
